Time is a difficult concept for young children so it is important to support them to gain a sense of time passing, as well as an awareness of time related change. This will help later on when they learn how to tell the time and calculate difference.
Knowledge of time is underpinned by the following skills:
Being able to count
Knowing time is measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years.
Understanding language such as fast, slow, quickest, slowest
Children learn about time through gaining experience of ordering and sequencing events as well as timing things .
What can you do at home to support your child ?
Sit with your child on a Sunday evening and write a short diary of the weekend. Encourage them to look back over the past couple of days and say what they did, where and when.
Make a scrap book with pictures they have drawn about their weekend and discuss it with them.
Take photos to share with your child to help them remember.
